Into the East – Eastern Europe in History

Prague

It started at the morning of the first Christmas day to Prague via Munich. The train ride till Munich was comfy and until Lindau I was happy to had a seat reservation. From Lindau to Munich I was nearly alone. I ate some lunch at the train station in Munich. Already here I was happy to made the decision for the backpack and not the usual luggage. It is easier to go on and off the train and change the tracks. The six hours in the train to Prague I was nearly alone. In the evening I deboarded the train one station before the main station which was nearer to my stay in Prague-Smichov. Unfortunately, is this station a bit lost and cranky. Luckily, I found my tram to my apartment which I booked by Air BnB soon. The apartment itself was really nice.

At the next morning I walked alongside the river Moldau to the Charles Bridge. The walked was worth it. It was a sunny day and by feed I could explore the capital of Czech Republic. I walked over the Charles bridge to the old town where the Christmas market was still there. At the tourist information I bought tickets for a classic concert and a trip to the concentration camp and Ghetto Terezin. The old town part was nice and had a lot of sight as the Pulver tower, bridges, churches, parish hall and so on. During my walked I enjoyed the tree cake called Trdelnik which you could find a lot here in eastern Europe. I love this with cinnamon sprinkled sweet.

After a massage I enjoyed a delicious Stroganov and walked to the main station. There I bought me a seat reservation for my way next to Bratislava. In the evening I enjoyed the Vivaldi Concert at the parish hall. It is a really nice building which is worth to see from the inside. Also in this building is the restaurant Plzenska with good Czech food.

Early in the morning after breakfast, I met with a small German speaking group in the bus to Terezin. The drive was around 45 minutes to the little fortress. The big and little fortress of Terezin was originally build from the son from Marie Theresia, Joseph the second as a defense against Bohmen. In the beginning of World War 2, the fortress was taken over from Nazi and used as a concentration camp. It is impressive and shocking to see and hear what each part of the building was used for. Here in Terezin is no gas chamber and the people was driven with a direct trainline to Auschwitz.  The big fortress was also used as kind of a working camp but the people had more “liberty”. It was more used for propaganda. We visited also the cemetery and the crematory. The cemetery must be rebuilt in because of the flooding in 2002. In the big fortress live today people again.

We arrived in the afternoon back at the city where I walked up to the castle of Prague. The castle area is huge and you have a beautyful view over Prague. I had a really delicious dinner at the restaurant called “Art&Food Had” Here in Prague you can notice really good the German and Russian influence. The city themselves is really steeped in history and where the tourism is it is really beautyful. At the other side it was a bit dirty and shabby.

Bratislava

In the morning I’ve gone with the tram to the main train station. After breakfast I was looking for the track 6S. At track 6 I found out, that two tracks as well as south and north of the 6 where seperate. So, in total you had 4 trains which were going to different locations. But as many other people looked bewildered, I didn’t think I was that wrong. As I went to my seat I was really glad to had a reservation. The train was really full and with a delay from 30 minutes we drove to Bratislava. I really enjoyed the view out of the window the forests with them rivers and sometimes some farms stand in the fields. Arrived in Bratislava, I’ve checked-in in my hotel in the middle of the city. I walked up to the castle where I had a fantastic view over the capital of Slovakia. In the twilight I walked alongside the river to the mall Eurovea. Later I walked through the old town and found a really good restaurant called Dolnozemska with friendly waiter.

After breakfast I walked through the old town. Bratislava isn’t big but it’s a really beautyful and charming city where you have delicious food and good shopping possibilities. Further I’ve gone with the train from Bratislava to Bucharest over Budapest. In Budapest I had to change the train station and had to found first the right bus. Mastered I had some time at the train station Keleti for dinner. In the quad couchette, I shared the cabin with a nice Romanian family.
