Mexico – Enjoy the Journey

Mexico – Enjoy the Journey

After lunch in Villahermosa, I started the engine from my rental car. And he went on with a little delay. So, I drove the remaining two and a half hours until I arrived in Palenque in front of the hotel. There I parked the car for the next two nights and booked a tour for the next day. I also went for a short walk in the city and enjoyed my dinner.

The next day I slept a bit longer, had breakfast and did some workout. They picked me up at 12 noon for the tour to Agua Azul. First, we went to a beautiful waterfall in the middle of a forest. We spent half an hour walking around including behind the waterfall. The trip continued to the Cascadas de Agua Azul. A waterfall staircase with incredibly turquoise colored water. I met a nice Mexican who was also on the tour. Together we walked up this waterfall staircase and had on the way some freshly squeezed lemonade. It was made only with lemons. However, the lemon was sweeter than sour, so you could drink it so well. When we reached the top, we bathed above a waterfall. Time passed quickly so we had to get to the bus that took us back to Palenque.

The next day I went to Calakmul. My car didn’t want to start again after refueling after the long drive. Now that I knew what was going on, I just took a 10-minute break at the petrol station. Fortunately, the Mexicans are very patient with me. Calakmul is a small place with other Maya temples where I spent 2 nights. Since the place was easy to explore and there were no people in the temple place where I didn’t have to pay anything, I took it very easy.

The drive to the big city of Chetumal was short and so I had half a day to walk here. I didn’t feel that comfortable here in the evening and after a short refreshment in the pool I went for dinner nearby. The concierge recommended that I should to the Bacalar Lagoon nearby at Bacalar. There I could pay something at a hotel to use the facility and go swimming in the lagoon. I could use the paid amount as a voucher in the restaurant for food and drink. So, in the end my stay here at the beautiful lagoon was for free.

I was really looking forward to Tulum. Globetrotter booked me a room in the beautiful Hotel Aluna Tulum. It was right in the middle between the city and the sea. The hotel had a partner hotel by the sea where I could use the beach chairs for free. Tulum is a bit touristy, but also very beautiful. I walked into town and did some shopping and had a coffee break I enjoyed in one of the many restaurants here and watched the people walking around.

The next day I got up early in the morning to go to the Gran Cenote. So, I avoided the many tourists and could refresh myself in the beautiful water. In the afternoon I took a taxi to the partner hotel by the Caribbean Sea. I enjoyed the day with sunbathing and an iced coffee. Since it was very windy, I decided not to go for a swim. I walked back to the hotel where I ended my evening with a delicious dinner and red wine.

The end of my Mexico trip and thus of my world trip came closer. However, I have already booked an extension of this trip and after a short stop in Switzerland I wanted to go back to Perth for a few weeks. So, I was happy to see my family again before I want to go to the other end of the world again.

But first, I enjoyed two more days in Cancun. I was amazed that there weren’t that many tourists here. I didn’t really follow the news during my whole trip and so I thought nothing suspicious. In the hotel I booked a boat tour to the Isla Mujeres for the next day. The tour was on a catamaran and the drinks were included. The Isla Mujeres was not very spectacular. However, the boat trip was fun and we could enjoy the beach on Isla Mujeres. On my last day I had to check out, but I was allowed to use the hotel area all day. My plane back to Switzerland in Zurich didn’t leave until 10pm. I also had to leave the car at the airport. So, I spend the time with some sunbathing. Cancun airport was very empty. But maybe that was just the way it was. The flight with the Edelweiss was also half empty. I enjoyed the night flight in the economy plus with the empty seat next to me and was really looking forward to seeing my family again for a short time, I thought.

In Zurich, the airport was also practically empty with signs everywhere that people should pay attention to social distance and hygiene measures. I wasn’t really aware of the whole corona situation. It ended up that my stay in Switzerland was a little longer and my stay in Australia was postponed until further notice.

Mexico, Yucatan is very nice to travel. You have a lot of culture and the people are very nice. Especially if you try to speak some Spanish. Traveling alone as a woman went very well and I most of the time I felt safe. I really enjoyed the time here, the weather, the people, the culture and of course the food.
