Experience New York City on a weekend – Bucket list

There are many things to do and see in Manhattan. New York City was founded in 1624. Once I have visited New York in January. It was cold but had only a few tourists. You can visit a lot of attractions and go to restaurants without stay to long in line. Another time I was in summer which was also really beautyful. It could be hot but you can enjoy the weather by a boat trip or in one of the nice parks. Here are some of my favourites to do during a weekend in the big apple.

See a Broadway show:

I really like musicals. Watch a Broadway show is one of my must do in New York. My favourite Broadway shows which I have already seen are the lion king, phantom of the opera and wicked. We booked the ticket in New York. But it is also easy to book tickets in advanced.

Empire State Building:

The Empire State Building is also a typical tourist sight which you have to visit. You have a great view and the building themselves is impressive. If you go in the morning you won’t wait long in line.

High Line in Chelsea:

High Line Park is a not used freight train road which is above from the reads from Manhattan and rebuilt into a park between 2006 – 2014. It is not a typical touristic sight but really lovely to have a walk and a picnic as well.

Central Park:

The Central Park is a nice break from the impulsive and exciting city life. To walk trough, you will need around 2 hours per way. The park is huge but also really lovely and offers a lot of possibility to do. You can walk trough, drive with one of the romantic carriage or rent a bicycle. You can visit the Zoo or rent a boat in the Loab Boathouse. Specially the boat makes a lot of fun.

9/11 Memorial – Ground Zero:

The Memorial of 9/11 also called Ground Zero is impressive but emotional to visit. It is worth it but also sad to see all the names and ages of the victims.

Walk the Brooklyn bridge:

Finished in 1883 is Brooklyn bridge that landmark of New York City. You can walk from Manhattan to Brooklyn which is around 1.8 km. The pathway above the traffic is nice and the few to the Skyline of Manhattan is stunning. On Brooklyn site, you have nice restaurants and a park where you can enjoy the awesome view of the bridge and the skyline in the background. When you stay hear you will imagine why Brooklyn bridge is also called the “Yearn-Bridge” which goas into the heart of Manhattan”. It symbolises the dream of a better life.

Boat Trip on the Hudson and East River:

On the most trips, I have to take a boat trip. To see the big apple from the water side is stunning and also relaxing. You can visit a lot of spots and of course you will see the liberty statue.

Times Square:

You can’t miss to walk along in the Times Square. It is the commercial and theatre district in Manhattan and so stunning to see it. A lot of shops, restaurants and as well the Broadway is located there.

Grand Central Station:

Grand Central Station is a train station in New York and the biggest in the world. The historical building is stunning and beautyful to see.

New York Public Library:

The New York Public Library in Manhattan is the biggest library in the world and a beautyful historical building. Don’t miss it.

Walking through Neighbourhoods:

One of my recommendations to experience a city is, walk through the neighbourhoods. Here I can recommand Greenwich Village and Chelsea.

Shopping:

What is New York without shopping? It gives a lot of shopping spots in New York. 5th Avenue, Times Square, Macys, SoHo and much more.

Eat in:

In New York you can eat for every budget and kind of food. The cuisine is great and such a huge variety. Here are some of my tested recommendations.

  • The spotted pig
  • Brunch at rue 59
  • Chez Josephine. A nice French restaurant. Excellent food, expensive with live music.
  • Family and Friends is a great spot to have a real New Yorker Pizza!
  • You have to eat a hot dog on the street of the City.

New York has much more to offer in and around. That was only a few points which I really like and had the chance to experience during my two visits. May I will have the chance again to enjoy this beautyful and exciting city and see much more sights.
