Iceland – Fire and Ice

Iceland – Fire and Ice

To see Iceland after ten years was really special for me. This country in the north was my first travel without parents and this trip which everything started. Iceland as well as the journey itself fascinates me.

It was a beautyful feeling as we depart with Icelandair in Keflavik. Direct from the airport we picked-up our rental car and had a 40 minutes’ drive to our hotel in Reykjavik. The way from airport to the capital city of Iceland itself was fascinating with the lava fields and this special nature. After check-in in our hotel KEA Reykjavik Lights we drove to the city center. There we found easily a free parking field. We walked through the center where we had dinner in the fish restaurant “Messinn”. I had a typical Icelandic fish stew names Plokkfiskur. The dinner was delicious. Afterwards we walked along the pier to Harpa, which is the concert hall build up in 2011. Before back in the hotel we visited the Sun ship Solfar.

After breakfast, we leave early to Thingvellir. Thingvellir is that place where Iceland was founded and where the American and Eurasian tectonic plate breaks apart. A lot of other tourists visited this place too. We drove to Geysir to visit the hot springs. Strokkur splashed every few minutes water from the earth. The landscape was awesome. The food in the tourist center was good but as many other restaurants here quite expensive. We visited the waterfall Gullfoss which is part of the river Hvite and 32 high. On the way to our guesthouse we passed the crater lake Kerid, which is part of the Grimsnes-volcano field. After check-in in the guesthouse Lambastadir, we drove 10 minutes to the town Selfoss where we had a delicious dinner in the Kaffi Krus. Back in the guesthouse we enjoyed our Rum and Martini from home in the hot pod.

From Selfoss we drove south to the Seljalandfoss waterfall where walked behind them. It was a bit wet but a great experience. The waterfall self is impressive and beautyful. Forward we visited Skogafoss where we walked up the stairs at the top of the waterfall. Along the ring road number 1, we had a stop at Dyrholae. There we enjoyed our lunch with bread and meat which we had bye in a shopping center. We also walked along the cliffs with the black beach and saw some puffins. Near our next guesthouse is a place called Skaftafell which is placed on the biggest glacier in Europe. There we walked really close to the glacier of Vatnajökull. Unfortunately, we had a bit rain. Fortunately, we had the rest of the week luck with beautyful weather the most time. While Iceland is in the middle of Atlantic, it has a fast change of the weather every few hours. Dinner we had in our hotel where we ate again a good fish. The prices in Iceland for food and drinks are really expensive. Also from the supermarket. But the quality is really good and we had through the whole week delicious meals.
