Iceland – Hot Earth

Iceland – Hot Earth

From the hotel Smyrlabjörg, we drove directly to the glacier lake Jökulsarlon. On this lake, we had a ship cruise with a amphibian boat between the icebergs. The lake is connected through a river with the ocean. That’s the reason why the lake will never freeze.  The boat cruise with the glacier Vatnajökull in the background was really impressive and beautyful. After that trip, the walked along the lake to the ocean where we watched the icebergs floating into the ocean. The next one hour drive we reached the town Höfn. There we ate a delicious burger in the Kaffi Hornid. Höfn self is a pretty small town. After refreshment, we drove along the ring road in the direction of Eglisstadir. We enjoyed the barren and beautyful landscape from Iceland. In Djupivogur we had a rest with coffee and cake in an old building direct by the ocean. Arrived in our hotel Svartiskogur, we had a delicious fish for dinner. In general, the food here is expensive but also has a good quality and tasty. Later in the evening we walked around in the nature.

At the next the we drove to the lake Myvatn. There we visited the hot spring place Hverir. This landscape with the hot earth and the look as a moon scenery is really impressive. Only the strong smell of sulfur is not that likable. Few kilometers away is the volcano Krafla. We visited the crater lake and drove then to the natural bath of Myvatn. While we reached our guesthouse Brekka in Husavik early, we had the time for whale watching. During the check-in for whale watching they informed us, that the ocean will be really wild. Anyway, we didn’t miss the chance to see the big mammals. Equipped with overalls the wavy ship cruise started. We saw some humpback wales really close to the boat. After a while many people got seasick. I enjoyed during this my cinnamon bun and a hot chocolate. Here it gets darker very late so we had the time to enjoy our beautyful guesthouse.

Strengthen with a tasty breakfast, we drove 5 hours along the ring road to Borgarnes. The landscape is still breathable. On the waterfall Godafoss where many people. However, for me this place has nothing lost from it’s magic. By the halve island Vatnsnes we saw some seals. Borgarnes self is not a beautyful city but we enjoyed the awesome sunset on the horizon.

In the morning, we set forth to the center of Reykjavik. We rise up the tower of Hallgrims church. Over 70-meter-high we had a good view through the whole city and further. The day we finished our holidays in Iceland with shopping and walking through the city. While here was the pride parade, a lot of people visited the capital city of Iceland. We enjoyed in the restaurant Rox a delicious dinner before we drove back to the airport on 4 in the morning.

  1. It is amazing that the lake will not freeze due to its connection to the sea by river. I hope nobody got seasick due to the rough sea. Overall quite lovely pictures.

    cheers
