Welcome in the land of rainbows

Welcome in the land of rainbows

After the flight with stopover in Amsterdam with KLM, my parents, brother and me had a good arrival in Edinburgh. After check-in in our hotel, we enjoyed a good pint of beer and delicious Fish and Chips at the Pub called Worlds End. Along the Royal Mile we experienced the Scottish weather. During the 5-minute walked up to the castle, we had rain, storm and sun with blue sky. Unfortunately, as we arrived at the castle, it has closed. So, we enjoyed another beer in a pub and walked along the North Bridge where we saw Calton Hill and the castle in a beautyful light play. At the Rose Street we went for dinner above a pub and ate a really good meat pie. Our parents went back to the hotel while me and my brother where going to a ghost tour. The tour was really good and we walked in the vault of the south bridge and learned more about the history of Edinburgh in a special way.

On the next morning we took the train to Inverness. We already booked the tickets online and had a special price with seat reservation. The trip was beautyful with the special weather here in Scotland and the many rainbows. Arrived in Inverness we get safety instructions for our houseboat and arranged our luggage and online buy food in our home for this week. As practiced on our many house boat holidays in France, we managed the first locks and swing bridges without any problem. Soon we drove over the Loch Ness. The drive was a bit wavy but the weather with the rainbows was awesome. We enjoyed our beer and aperitif with a gorgeous view over the Scottish glens. At the evening we arrived at Urquart Bay harbour and went out for a walk. The evening ended with good food, wine and a quiz round.

After breakfast, for me porridge, we ride through the Loch Ness to Fort Augustus. There we had a lock staircase with 5 locks to manage. While it was lunchtime, we had the chance to visit this nice village. Afterwards we went through a canal with y beautiful forest. After another lock we stopped for tonight’s rest anywhere in nowhere. We walked there along the forest and moors in the middle of the highlands.

With our cosy houseboat we went over Loch Oich and had a stop at an old castle. The drive through the Loch in the middle of the Glens was awesome. Soon we arrived at our stay for tonight at Loch Lochy. We had a delicious dinner in the Floating Pub called Eagels Inn. The food at this Pub in a ship was really delicious.

After an uneasy night, we drove over Lock Lochy to Banavie which is next to Fort Williams. At noon we arrived at the Neptune Staircase. We walked to the castle of Fort Williams where we saw the Jacobite steam train and went also to the Ben Nevis Distillery.

The way back to Inverness was also really relaxing. We enjoyed the ship cruise and the landscape. We stopped again at the Kyle lock for a night. There, me and my brother walked a shortcut around the nature. The forest was a bit creepy. As we arrived at a small house, which was not made of gingerbread, we only waited that the which opens the door. Luckily none was there and we went back at the boat before it was dark.

Back at Fort Augustus for lunch, we tried some Haggis which was really delicious. We drove over the Loch Ness and arrived back at Urquart Bay harbour. We walked to the village of Drumnadrochit and had their delicious dinner in an old manor. It was a good way to end our last evening at the boat.
