Vienna – a versatile city

Vienna – a versatile city

I’ve already heard a lot of good things about Vienna, the capital city of Austria. My mother adores since years from this historical city. So, it wasn’t difficult to decide with my better half where to go for the longer weekend.

After we depart two hours late from Zurich, we arrived after 12h in the night in Vienna. Unfortunately, no train drives anymore so we had to take a cap. After a 20 minute’s drive we arrived in the hotel Austria Trend Hotel Savoyen next to Belvedere. The checking was easy and also when the hotel is a little bit older it is clean with big rooms. Perfect for a city trip.

After sleep late we walked around 20 minutes to the middle of the city to the Stephansplatz where we had outside a nice brunch. Because we were right there we visited the Stephansdom. Afterwards we walked through the streets of Vienna to the St. Michaels church which is placed counterpart of the Hofburg. There we had an interesting tour in the crypt below the church. The church smelled strong to frankincense. The crypt has already witness a lot. Everywhere you can find bones from the buried people. Here in this crypt were 4’000 peoples buried but only 250 wooden and tin caskets lie around. The other where used for firewood and the bones to fill the ground. Here you can walk really on bones of the deceased. After the tour, we enjoyed an orange punch.

Christoph and I walked through the Hofburg were also the Spanish riding school is located. On the Christmas market on the Maria-Theresien-Place we found a Mozart-Eggliquer-punch which we needed to had a taste. Starched from the delicious punch we walked along the museums quarter to the torture museum. The museum was poor and after a short visit we walked to the Christmas marked on the Rathausplatz (town hall square). At once I was fascinated from the beautiful Christmas market with this lights and the Rathaus in the background which looks more as a fairy tale castle. Sadly, the weather wasn’t that good. So, we couldn’t to the surprise which Christoph has planned. He would like to go to an ice park which is not only a field. They are icefields and rinks all connected together in the Christmas marked. Whatever, we enjoyed the mulled wine and the marked. With the tram, we drive directly to the hotel to had a rest and freshen up for the dinner. The dinner we had in the Melker Stiftskeller which has a ethnic ambience with delicious and pricy food. Christoph had a Wiener Schnitzel and I had a beef goulash.

On Sunday, we drive with the city train from the station Rennweg to the Prater. The Prater is something like a public leisure park. After a breakfast or better lunch, we strengthen us with a mulled wine and went for a drive to the ferris wheel. This ferris wheel is build up in 1987. The gondola is big and nice and the view over Vienna was beautiful. The Prater has a lot more of rollercoaster but they were close on the time when we were there. We walked over the Donaukanal to the Hundertwasser house. This housing area was fascinating to see how trees came out of the walls. A visit is worth it. After we walked through the city park to the city centre, we ate in the Hotel-Café Sacher a delicious Sachercake. Before we walked back to the hotel we enjoyed again a mulled wine and Mozart punch.

After the breakfast on Monday we visited the Kapuzinergruft or also called Imperial Crypt. This crypt is the burial place of Queen Maria Theresia, Imperial Kaiser Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth “Sissi” and a many more. The crypt is different as the one in the Michaels church. Much more well-kept and noble. We had a drink and something to eat in the Hard Rock Café and bought some Mozartkugeln. Next to our hotel is the castle of Belvedere. We walked through the park to the castle from where we had a beautiful view over Vienna. With the city train we drive for 2.30 Euro per person to the airport from where we had to fly back home.

Vienna is a relaxed city with fascinating places of interest and nice old buildings. Here you can visit much more in and around Vienna. But also for a weekend it is worth it to go on a flight or train and visit this city.
